We’ll provide a regular income if you're unable to work because of an accident or sickness.

  •  As a doctor, dentist or surgeon, you'll know better than anyone that ill health or an accident can happen to anyone at any time and when it does, the financial consequences can be devastating.  

LV= NHS sick pay guarantee

  • If you are a dentist, doctor or surgeon and eligible for NHS sick pay then you can select to be covered under our sick pay guarantee
  • You need to be registered (or provisionally registered) with the General Medical Council or General Dental Council, with a licence to practice in the UK
  • Simply select a 12 month waiting period for your Income Protection policy, and if you claim we'll pay out early based on how long you have been working for the NHS at the time. 
  • We will pay 50% of your Income Protection benefit when you go on to reduced NHS sick pay. We will then pay 100% of your Income Protection benefit once your NHS sick pay stops.
  • Please remember that for the NHS Sick Pay Guarantee, you must be receiving the NHS sick pay at point of claim 

The NHS sick pay entitlement is as follows:

  • during the first year of service – one month’s full pay and two months’ half pay
  • during the second year of service – two months’ full pay and two months’ half pay;
  • during the third year of service – four months’ full pay and four months’ half pay;
  • during the fourth and fifth years of service – five months’ full pay and five months’ half pay;
  • after completing five years of service – six months’ full pay and six months’ half pay.

£3,000 benefit guarantee

  • At LV=, we don’t like the idea of you not getting what you paid for. So, we’ve introduced the LV= £3,000 Benefit Guarantee. It’s available to doctors and surgeons who are licensed and registered to practice in the UK with the General Medical Council.
  • With our £3,000 benefit guarantee, no matter how much your income may have dropped by or when you come to make a claim (as long as you are working at least 32 hours a week), we guarantee to pay you at least £3,000 a month. If you chose cover of less than £3,000 a month, then we guarantee to pay the level of cover you chose. Less any continuing income you are still receiving (explained further in Appendix 1 of the plan conditions).
  • The aim of this guarantee is to protect you against a genuine drop in income after you take out the policy. 

Sabbatical break cover

Our sabbatical break cover allows you to take an extended break (up to two years) away from your role to study or work abroad. As long as you continue to pay your premiums, we'll treat you as if you were working in your normal role, and you’ll keep your normal level of cover, own occupation and definition of sickness.

You won't need to tell us you're taking a sabbatical, you just need to be able to prove:

  • The sabbatical was approved by your employer


  • Your job was kept open for you

Please note you are unable to benefit from sabbatical break cover within the first 12 months of your policy starting.

No HIV/AIDS exclusion

  • Needlestick injuries are one of the most common occupational hazards faced by medical professionals. And whilst the risk is small, you can be reassured to know that we don't have exclusions for HIV/AIDS.

Overseas cover

If you are considering working abroad, we can offer flexibility. You can maintain your cover and we won’t cancel your policy - as long as there was no intention to permanently move overseas when you took out the policy. You can claim whilst abroad if you have a registered UK bank account.

We’ll only restrict a claim if it comes from outside of Australia, Canada, Europe, Hong Kong, Japan, New Zealand or USA, where we’ll only pay a claim for a maximum of 26 weeks
