Marc Perry, LV= Consumer Finance Expert, shares his insights
With nearly half (45%) of UK adults not confident they'll be financially better off in five years' time*, and almost half of workers only able to manage for up to three months without an income*, National Financial Awareness Day is a timely reminder to check in on your finances.
Financial wellbeing isn't just about balancing the books each month. It's about understanding your overall financial picture and feeling confident that you could cope if life took an unexpected turn. Whether it's an unforeseen expense, illness, redundancy or a change in family circumstances, having a clear view of your finances can help you to navigate challenges and plan for the future with greater confidence.
The good news is that improving your financial resilience doesn't necessarily require major changes. Sometimes, it starts by simply asking yourself a few important questions.
1. Do I know where my money goes each month?
Understanding your income and spending is the foundation of good financial management. As household budgets remain under pressure from higher bills and living costs, it's worth regularly reviewing where your money is going. From utility bills and insurance premiums to streaming services and mobile phone contracts, small savings can add up over time and help improve your overall financial resilience.
2. Could I cope with an unexpected expense?
A broken boiler, urgent car repairs or an unexpected household bill can quickly put pressure on finances. Having an emergency fund can provide valuable breathing space and help reduce reliance on borrowing when the unexpected happens.
3. Am I making the most of my workplace benefits?
Many people underestimate the value of what's available through their employer. Pension contributions, life cover, sick pay and financial wellbeing support can all play an important role in strengthening financial resilience, yet they're often overlooked. Taking a few minutes to check could reveal benefits you're already paying for but not making the most of.
4. Have I reviewed my pension and longer-term savings recently?
For many, retirement can feel a long way off, but small actions taken today can make a significant difference over time. Regularly reviewing pension contributions and savings plans can help ensure you're on track to meet your longer-term goals.
5. Would my household be financially resilient if circumstances changed?
Life rarely goes according to plan. Considering how you would manage if your income changed, even temporarily, can help to identify potential gaps in your financial safety net before they're put to the test.
6. Do I know where to go for trusted financial guidance?
Managing money can sometimes feel overwhelming, particularly when financial decisions become more complex. Taking the time to fully understand your options and seeking professional guidance can help you make more informed decisions and feel more confident about your financial future.
National Financial Awareness Day isn't about having all the answers or completely overhauling your finances overnight. It's about taking a moment to check in with your financial health, understanding where you stand today and identifying small actions that could strengthen your financial resilience for the future.
After all, spending just a few minutes reviewing your finances today could help you feel more confident and prepared for whatever tomorrow brings.
