Helping people who can’t afford the essentials in partnership with Trussell

Sustainable mutual

We’ve partnered with Trussell

Helping to fund its ‘Help through hardship helpline’ and our local food banks.

  • Since 1843, our purpose is to help people live financially confident lives – it’s the reason we exist.
  • We're delighted to support Trussell and our local food banks through a partnership that’s helping to fund the charity’s ‘Help through hardship helpline’.
  • The helpline supports people who are struggling to afford essentials like food, heating and toiletries and aims to understand individual’s circumstances to help them get the support they need.
  • As part of LV= Together, we’re always looking for ways to further support our communities and make a positive and lasting impact – it’s part of what makes us a sustainable mutual which is one of our three sustainability pillars.

LV= and Trussell

As part of our 2024 and 2025 Annual General Meeting (AGM) communications with our members, we’ve donated £30,000 towards the important work that Trussell does including its ‘Help through hardship helpline’, delivered in partnership with Citizens Advice.

In 2024, we asked members if they would prefer to receive their notifications via email instead of in the post. As a result of the positive response by our members, we’ve donated £15,000 to Trussell.

In 2025, we committed to donating £1 for every member who voted, up to £15,000. We were delighted to be able to make this donation on behalf of our members.

“We’re delighted to partner with Trussell and support the important work it does through its ‘Help through hardship helpline’. The helpline supports people with urgent needs, such as putting food on the table, and provides people with advice and support that unlocks money and services someone should be getting. Our purpose is to help people to live financially confident lives, so to contribute to this invaluable service is a real privilege.”

Samantha Preece, Chief Brand and Communications Officer

"Thank you to LV= for supporting our 'Help through hardship helpline' since 2024. At Trussell, our mission is to end the need for food banks in the UK. We are so grateful for the donation of £30,000 to the Helpline, which has meant we can provide vital emergency food support to people when they need it most, whilst working to tackle the root cause of the problem through tailored advice that can support people not to have to turn to a food bank in the future."

More about Trussell and the helpline

Trussell is an anti-poverty charity and community of 1,400 food bank locations and they work together to ensure no one in the UK needs a food bank to survive, while providing emergency food and practical support for people left without enough money to live on.

Trussell works with the Citizens Advice Bureau, the UK’s largest provider of free advice, to provide a channel for people to access free phone-based welfare and income support, as well as supporting people with accessing emergency food. The advice provided via the ‘Help through hardship helpline’ is personalised and covers a broad range of topics, including housing, debt, immigration and wider support to maximise a person’s income ensuring they are receiving all the social security support they are eligible for and any grants they might be able to get. The advisers can also direct people to specialist onward support if needed.

Furthering our support to Trussell

Our colleagues are passionate about helping communities in need, both local to our offices and further afield.

In 2024, some of our colleagues took part in a fundraising challenge and walked or ran between 5k and 50k to raise money for two charities. Two teams competed for the most kilometres travelled, with each team fundraising for one of two causes – Julia’s House (a children’s hospice in Dorset) and Trussell.

In total, colleagues raised over £34,000 for the two charities – over £16,000 of this was donated to Trussell.

As well as fundraising, our permanent collection points in all of our offices provide an ongoing opportunity for colleagues to donate vital supplies for our local food banks in Bournemouth, Exeter and Letchworth (Hitchin).
