Electric car owners to pay car tax from 1 April 2025

Car tax (Vehicle Excise Duty or VED) is currently free for fully electric vehicles (EVs) but next year they’ll cost the same to tax as a petrol or diesel. That’s currently £190 a year but it could go up.

If your car’s worth over £40,000 don’t forget there’s also the so-called ‘luxury car tax’ (or expensive car supplement). That’s £410 a year on top of VED for five years after a model is first registered.
