Here’s what to do if your car breaks down

Step 1
If you break down, the first thing you need to do is pull over into the hard shoulder if you’re on a motorway, or as far left and away from the road as possible (as long it’s safe to do so).

Switch on your hazard lights and, if it’s dark, keep your sidelights on as well.
Step 2
If you can leave your car safely, make sure you use the passenger door to keep back from the road and any moving traffic.

Stay on the verge or on the other side of a barrier if there is one. Keep a clear view of the on-coming traffic and never stand in front of your vehicle.
Step 3
Sometimes you can’t get your vehicle clear of the road. In this case, only leave your vehicle if it’s safe to. If you can’t safely exit the vehicle keep your seatbelt and hazard lights on at all times.
Step 4
Once you’re in a safe place, make a note of your location and the surrounding areas and call our 24-hour breakdown line on 0800 929 111 or 01484 435 806. For Text Phone first dial 18001. Calls will be recorded.
