Our environmental responsibility

Our commitment to the environment

Here at LV= General Insurance, we play our part in taking care of the environment and have accelerated our climate targets for business operations. In line with the Science Based Target Initiative, our overall goal is to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 70% by 2025 (compared to 2019).

To deliver net zero in our operations by 2030 we will reduce the impact of our offices. We will achieve this by strengthening environmental management and sourcing 100% renewable electricity. The key drivers will be the shift to a fully electric corporate car fleet by 2030, at the latest, and a reduction of 40% GHG emissions deriving from travel activities by 2025.

Our journey to net zero's already begun and we understand where our key impacts are. One of the most significant is our supply chain. This covers everything we need to buy to operate as a business through to the products and materials we buy when we settle claims. To help us set out a transition plan for these areas, working with our supply chain partners, we'll ask our global suppliers to make a public commitment to net zero GHG emissions in line with the 1.5°C pathway.

We recognise there's more to be done and we continue to evolve our strategy and targets, committed to limiting any harm we cause the environment. So, to address our remaining emissions, we'll use high-quality solutions for carbon removal.

As part of Allianz, LV= is also a signatory to The Net Zero Insurance Alliance (NZIA), a first-of-its-kind network for insurance underwriters. It means we've committed to reducing carbon emissions associated with what we insure to net zero.

All members of the NZIA will set themselves measurable and science-based climate targets, which will be updated every five years. The first target should be reached by 2027 and all members will report annually on their progress.

Greenheart standard

In April 2021 we launched the Green Heart standard across our branded body shop network as part of our Social Impact strategy. We're working in partnership with all 24 branded body shops around the UK to implement six new principles. These are carbon neutrality and PAS2060, EV courtesy cars, Green Parts, Diversity & Equality in the workforce, Mental Health awareness, and apprenticeships. Find out more about our Green Heart Standard.

Here are just some of the ways we look after the environment at LV= General Insurance

Renewable electricity

To deliver net zero in our operations by 2030 we will reduce the impact of our offices. We will achieve this by sourcing 100% renewable electricity by working together with all of our sites that are landlord owned, and various energy suppliers to make sure that the electricity coming into all of our operational locations is from a renewable source.

Paper suppliers and paper reduction

The nature of our business often means we need to send out formal communication or documentation to our customers in paper form. Our efforts to reduce paper consumption are underpinned by the increasing shift towards digital communication as well as reducing all paper use in our offices.

Reducing water and waste

Water is a shared resource and minimising our water consumption is a key principle commitment under the Group Environmental Guidelines. We aim to minimise the waste we generate and to re-use or recycle materials wherever possible. We recognise that re-using or recycling materials should be our last resort if reduction is not possible.

Electric Vehicle Insurance (EV)

It's no secret that electric cars are here to stay, with manufacturers making more affordable models and UK infrastructure getting better with each passing year. With many people choosing to make the switch to plug-in power, we're here to offer comprehensive car insurance for fully electric vehicles.

That's good news for the environment, and good news for future generations too. Find out more about our electric car insurance.

Influencing demand decisions to promote sustainable solutions

As awareness and influence of Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) requirements increasingly impacts our business decisions, we're working to integrate best practice ESG criteria and requirements into supplier selection, development and ordering processes across LV=GI. Nightwatchman

In order to comply with the Energy Saving Opportunity Scheme (ESOS), which we’ve been signed up to since 2014, we implemented more energy saving initiatives across our offices. One of these is the installation of new building management systems to decrease our energy usage. The new heating and cooling management system is more accurate and sophisticated, meaning we're more energy efficient.

We use 'Nightwatchman' which is a power management tool that automatically turns off computers and printers when they're not in use.

And that's not all....

We're proud to have won the Environmental Trailblazer Award at the Bodyshop Magazine Bodyshop Awards 2022.
