Volvo are pioneers of vehicle safety and innovation. In 1959, they were the first to fit three-point seatbelts into their cars. They then waived the patent rights so everyone could benefit from it.

In 1976, Volvo fitted the world's first three-way catalytic converter ('Lambda Sond') to reduce hazardous exhaust emissions by about 90 per cent. Volvo left the patent open and today, almost every engine in the world uses it.

In 1991, they developed their Side Impact Protection System (SIPS) and followed this up in 1994 with side impact airbags.

Today, Volvo continue to push the limits of safety technology and have set a goal that by 2020, nobody should die or be seriously injured in a Volvo.

Volvo produce a wide range of vehicles from the V40 hatchback to the large XC90 SUV. They effectively occupy the 'middle ground' between the mainstream and prestige brands.
