Under Volkswagen's ownership, Skoda has established itself as a producer of high quality, good value, mainstream family cars. While they may not boast the latest cutting edge technology or driving dynamics and their design isn't particularly exciting, they're practical, usable, comfortable and can often be bought for a few thousand pounds less than an equivalent Volkswagen.

Skodas tend to depreciate faster than VWs, which can make them a very smart second-hand buy.

Skodas range from the tiny Citigo, which is virtually the same as the VW Up! (but costs less) and Seat Mii, to the massive Superb (based on the VW Passat) which has more rear legroom than a Mercedes S Class. They also make SUVs like the small Yeti and large Kodiaq.

Skodas consistently score highly in customer satisfaction surveys, are applauded by car journalists and have won several awards. However as they use Volkswagen engines, some diesel models built between 2009 and 2015 may be affected by the 'dieselgate' scandal.

Like Volkswagens, Skodas can be purchased with the latest safety technology. Some insurers may consider these features when calculating a quote
