LV= makes supply chain more sustainable with launch of two new initiatives

  • The Green Heart Supplier Promise will ensure suppliers adopt and develop environmental practices that are socially responsible and ethical.
  • New targets also tackle all aspects of ESG, from providing equal opportunities to robust governance processes. 
  • The launch of a Green Heart Standard for the Building Contractor Network within LV= GI will help suppliers in home claims meet specific CSR goals. 

As part of its commitment to have a positive influence on society and become more environmentally responsible, LV= General Insurance (LV= GI) is today launching two new standards - the Green Heart Supplier Promise and Green Heart Standard for the Building Contractor Network (BCN). These initiatives have been established to ensure that suppliers within the LV= GI network meet the company’s corporate social responsibility goals and also become ‘greener’ suppliers. 

Aligned to LV=’s social purpose pillars of Environment and Sustainability, Diversity and Inclusion, Wellbeing and Responsible Business, the two initiatives aim to help supplier partners adopt and further develop practices that are environmentally sound, socially responsible, and ethical. 

As part of the Green Heart Supplier Promise LV= GI will ask its supplier partners to work towards a variety of commitments including:

  • Reducing carbon emissions year on year, with an overall aim of net-zero operations;
  • Setting a Science Based Target and implementing 100% Renewable Energy sources where possible;
  • Considering and encouraging use of Social Enterprises where possible within their own supply chains;
  • Monitor and track all applicable Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) risks and opportunities and make sure these are discussed at senior level for awareness and action; and Working towards reducing any gender pay gaps based upon performance and merit.
The new Green Heart Standard, which will provide guidance for building contractors who work with LV= GI on home related claims will support with: 
  • Mental Health Awareness – sadly every working day, two construction workers take their own life. Working with construction industry charity Lighthouse Club, suppliers will have access to free mental health support services, financial help and mental health first aid training.

  • Reducing Environmental Impact – 

o Contractors will use LV= GI’s supplier Recycling Lives  as part of their waste management services which will ensure more recycling of materials in home claims. The charity also provides support to communities through its Food Redistribution Centre which aims to tackle food poverty and reduce food waste. To date they’ve delivered 3.2 million meals across Lancashire & Cumbria to people who need it most. 

o Contractors will need to put in place a carbon management plan and evidence they are improving their environmental performance and employee environmental awareness through training.

  • Apprenticeships – to help safeguard the future of the sector and address the current skills shortage, contractors will need to participate and actively become involved in  apprenticeship schemes by working with local schools and colleges across the country. This will ensure LV=’s contractors provide opportunities for people to successfully enter the industry and gain both important life skills and practical experience. 
  • Diversity & Inclusion – LV= GI will work with contractors to develop and promote Diversity & Inclusion, ensuring all employees are treated equally and fairly through training and bespoke employee policies and processes covering LGBTQ+, ethnicity, culture, religion, parents/carers, disability (including neurodiversity and long term health conditions), age and gender.

“It’s also crucial we support and encourage fair opportunities for everyone, irrespective of background so that we can encourage diverse, forward-thinking workplaces in the industry. We hope what we’re doing will help develop a shared mindset with our supplier partners.” 

The Green Heart Standard for the BCN follows the same initiative launched in the motor repairs a year ago, which was a first of its kind in the industry. To date, 48 of the LV= bodyshop network are now Carbon Neutral with 45% of repairs now being directed to Carbon Neutral shops.
