Pets are lovely to have and enjoy and, as important parts of your life, your pets deserve the same attention, protection and consideration as other members of your family.
If your pet falls ill, has an accident or needs a visit to the vet, pet insurance – sometimes called pet health or pet medical insurance – can make sure your pet gets the best possible treatment without you worrying about the bill.
The two main types of pet health insurance
Most providers of pet health insurance offer two main types of cover. The names may differ but in essence, a ‘basic’ pet health insurance policy will cover vets’ bills for a maximum period (usually one year), with a maximum claim per condition.
With a ‘premier’ pet health insurance policy, there’s no time limit on reaching the maximum claim − and this maximum may be higher than with the basic insurance.
What pet health insurance can cover
Most pet health insurance plans cover your pets’ sickness and accidents – and some providers offer wider cover.
The levels of cover may vary and some providers allow you to top up your basic or premier cover with additional features − but you should always check the cover and maximum you can claim.
Pet health insurance excess
The excess (the amount you have to pay if you claim) can vary between different risks insured and can vary from provider to provider.
You’ll usually have to pay an excess for each sickness condition claim and for a Third Party claim but some providers, including LV=, don’t apply an excess for most other claims.
Is your pet eligible?
Some pet health insurance providers won’t insure certain pets or certain breeds of dog, e.g. dogs registered under the Dangerous Dogs Act. And some don’t insure pets above a certain age.
LV= pet insurance has no upper age limit, apart from under the death from illness cover which stops at nine years of age for dogs and 11 for cats.
