Keeping your pet fit and healthy

Pets are lovely to have but they're also a big responsibility, so it's important to make sure that they are kept healthy so that you can help prevent them from getting any illnesses that could have been avoided.

We provide a few hints and tips for keeping your pet healthy in our hints and tips section. However, if you have any specific doubts or concerns over the health of your pet then please consult your vet.

One of our tips for keeping your pet healthy is exercise; just as exercise is good for humans to maintain a healthy weight, keep muscles and joints flexible, and help them feel better and live longer, pets need exercise for all the same reasons. We have provided some simple ideas for how you can exercise your dog or cat on our exercise page.

As different pets need different amounts of exercise, it's a good idea to have a chat with your vet to determine what level of exercise would be good for your pet.

It's also useful to bear in mind, particularly with younger pets, the importance of vaccinations in keeping your pet healthy, as they protect your pet against common diseases that may be difficult or expensive to cure.
You can tell how an animal is feeling by his attitude and demeanour. So if he's acting happy and healthy then that's probably how he's feeling. If you have any doubt about your pet’s health, it's a good idea to pay a visit to the vet.

What should you consider when moving home or travelling abroad with your pet?

Moving to a new home can be stressful, particularly for pets who don't understand what's going on, as they can suddenly find themselves removed from familiar sights, sounds and smells that they're used to - it can be a traumatic experience. We provide some useful hints and tips on moving home with your pet and how to help your pet settle into its new surroundings.

If you're thinking of travelling abroad with your pet then it's important to plan ahead. In the past, travel often involved long periods of quarantine for your pet; however you can now apply for a pet passport meaning your pet can travel in and out of Britain without going into quarantine. This has been made possible by the Pet Travel Scheme (PETS) and we provide more information on getting a pet passport in our travelling abroad with your pet section
