Frequently Asked Questions

Am I covered under home insurance if my roof leaks?

Your home insurance might cover you - if the leak was caused by storm damage to your roof.

In general, if a storm has damaged your roof, you’d expect to see signs of damage to the exterior, like lots of missing tiles. If that's the case, you should be covered by your home insurance.

If there aren't any obvious signs of damage externally, or just one or two missing or slipped tiles, it’s more likely that a part of the roof structure has worn out, letting in water. That means your roof leak is due to wear and tear and you'll have to pay for any repairs.

What properties we can't insure?

LV= currently do not insure properties that…

• Has previously been flooded or is currently under a flood warning
• Has suffered from, or is showing any signs of, subsidence, landslip or heave
• Isn't built of brick, stone or concrete and roofed with slate, tiles, concrete, metal, asphalt, fibreglass or glass
• Isn't in a good state of structural repair
• Is a mobile home
• Has six or more bedrooms
• Has more bathrooms than bedrooms
• Is a listed property or is under a preservation order

How will a home insurance claim affect my premium?

If you claim on your home insurance, your premium could increase at your next renewal date. It all depends on the type of claim and how many claims you've had.

The price of your home insurance is more likely to be affected by the number of claims we receive as a whole. We settle thousands of home insurance claims every month. If the number goes up, due to things like increased accidental damage claims or extreme weather events - this could mean the costs to insure your home could go up, which will be reflected in a higher price.

Your home insurance premium is calculated on an individual basis. We tell you your price premium in your renewal quote, which is sent around three weeks before your renewal date.

What's covered with LV= buildings insurance?

Buildings insurance covers the structure of your home - this includes walls, permanent fixtures & fittings (such as your shower or toilet), drives and patios. Outbuildings such as sheds, garages and greenhouses may also be covered too.

With an LV= buildings insurance policy, you'll be covered against things like fire, floods, water leaks, theft and vandalism. Our insurance also includes standard accidental damage cover, plus our 24 hour domestic emergency helpline offers round the clock support and advice.

What does home liability insurance cover?

Public liability insurance covers you when you are being held responsible to a person or property, as the owner or occupier of your home. For example, our buildings insurance covers you as the owner of the home for claims such as a tile falling off of your roof and injuring a visitor.

Our contents insurance covers you and your family as the occupiers of the property and would cover for things like a visitor tripping up over a loose rug. Under contents insurance we also cover you for personal liability for claims such as you accidentally poking someone in the eye with your umbrella.

What is my home insurance excess?

Will I need to have certain types of locks or an alarm on my home?

Some properties need more security features to protect you and us against loss. We let you know when you get a quote if we would need your home to have additional security features installed. You'll also find this information under the personal details section of your home insurance documents.

If your documents show your home needs a certain level of security, we'll only provide cover for theft or attempted theft if the following security is used when your home is left unattended.

Your doors need to be secured with one of these four types of lock:

Mortice deadlocks with at least five levers
Locks to a minimum rating of British Standard BS3621
Three point multi locking system (double glazed doors)
Existing locks plus key operated locks fitted top and bottom

Window locks:

All your windows need to have key operated window locks

Alarm:

If we ask for an alarm, it needs to be (or have been) fitted by an NSI or SSAIB approved installer.

Am I covered for damage caused by water leaking?

Yes, you are covered for damage caused by a water leak.

LV= buildings insurance covers damage caused to your home by water leaking from any fixed tank, appliance or pipe. For Home we'll also pay up to £5,000 or £10,000 on Home Plus (no cover is provided on Essentials) for the cost of removing and replacing any part of the structure of your home to find the source of a water leak so repairs can be carried out.

Your belongings are covered too. LV= contents insurance covers damage caused to your personal items, such as sofas and carpets, by a leak from a fixed tank, appliance or pipe.

Do I get a home insurance discount if I take out more than one insurance policy with you?

I have an annexe, will LV= cover it?

We can cover an annexe, as long as your main home is insured with us. If the annexe has the same postal address as your home, is occupied by a member of your family and doesn’t have both a kitchen and bathroom, we just need to update the total number of bedrooms and bathrooms you have including the annexe.

If it has a separate postal address, is completely detached from the main home or is lived in by someone who is not a member of your family, we will cover it under a separate policy. This could be as a holiday home/landlord policy depending on what it’s used for.

My sofa is damaged, what am I covered for?

If you have enhanced accidental damage cover, you can claim on your home insurance to repair or replace a damaged sofa. This is for things like spilling a cup of coffee on a cream suite. If you’ve also got a matching armchair we also contribute 50% towards the cost of replacing any undamaged items, which are part of the same set or suite, if a repair or replacement of the damaged item is not available.

You will be covered for other perils such as fire/flood etc automatically.
