How up-to date are your details?

Once you have taken out an insurance policy, it’s really important to make sure any changes that happen have been told to your insurer to keep them up to date. We are aware that circumstances may change.

You may be thinking, what kind of details would my insurer need to know about? This may include:

Documentation
  • A change of name - If you have recently changed your name you will need to make sure this is updated as well as updating your driving licence to match.

  • Change of address - Insurance premiums may differ depending on where you live, it is vital that your insurance documents have the correct address of where you live. If you are a homeowner, your insurer will need to be made aware that you are moving house so that the correct property is insured.

  • Where your vehicle is kept - If you have car insurance and no longer keep your vehicle on the road when at home and now keep it on a private driveway, this could also make an impact on your premium.
  • Change in occupation - If your job now requires you to drive more, this may be classed as business use meaning you will need to add this to your policy if you don’t have it already.
  • Change your vehicle- When buying a new (or used) vehicle you must update your insurance provider, this means you will have the correct vehicle insured, otherwise your insurance will be void.
  • Private registration plate - If you have put a private plate on your vehicle, this will also need to be updated to your insurance provider. It will need to be updated if you put the original registration back onto the vehicle.
  • Modifications - Any modifications made to your vehicle will need to be disclosed to your insurer.

  • Building works - If you have any works being done on your property, you will need to tell your insurer as there may be measures that have to be put in place.

We recognise that some personal details may change after the policy has been taken out and sometimes people may forget to update their details. Your insurer would need to know all the above for your policy to still be valid. Having all these details up to date can really help if you were to ever need to make a claim, as having your details correct makes the claims journey more straightforward. If you have any queries regarding what details to update, speak to your insurance provider and they will be able to help.

It’s good practice to check that all details are up to date on any other policies you may have. Being an RCN member includes discounts on LV= Car and Home insurance, visit lv.com/rcn for more information.
