Information about the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) and Travel Aware initiative

Travel Aware

Advice from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office is available to help you prepare for travelling abroad. Spending some time reviewing and planning your trip by looking at the information on the Travel Aware page can help you stay safe and healthy while you're away.

Your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) and how to apply
An EHIC is a card that entitles you to free or reduced medical costs at state hospitals in European Economic Area countries and Switzerland. It will cover you for treatment that is needed to allow you to continue your stay until your planned return. Apply for an EHIC card.
Hiring a car abroad
If your driving licence was issued in England, Scotland or Wales, DVLA regulation requires drivers to get a 'check code' before hiring a car abroad
