Part-time pensioner: A new way of life

Machu Picchu

The very basic definition of retirement runs as follows: to cease working. It can therefore be seen as a period in one's life that is characterised by having no employment obligations.

This understanding has been historic (well, at least since the end of the 19th century, when it was first introduced in the industrialised west).

However, our idea of retirement is changing. Many factors are at play, least of all the fact that we're living longer and healthier lives.

Welcome to the age of the part-time pensioner, where retirees continue to work but at a pace and level that is less pronounced as it was, while also enjoying more leisure time.

Here are just a few things you may wish to do when you're not at work:

  • Write an epic novel

Remember when you were fresh out of university and you felt like the world was yours for the taking and how you would write the greatest novel ever?

As you know, life got in the way. Well, now is the time to sit down in front of your computer and get to work on a great piece of literature.

  • Get into the entrepreneurial spirit

There are a growing number of people over the age of 60 who are forgoing the typical relaxing and quiet nature of retirement, and instead getting into the entrepreneurial spirit.

This growing demographic, dubbed ‘grand-trepreneurs’, are spending their free time either setting up their own business or investing in new projects of interest to them. Old age means nothing when it comes to innovation and ambition.

  • Visit one of the Wonders of the World

You may have to put in a holiday request for this, but it will be worth it. Visiting one of the Wonders of the World is just something that we should all endeavour to do.

Some of the classic wonders include the Great Pyramid of Giza, the Temple of Artemis, the Great Wall of China, Machu Picchu and the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus.

  • Master a hobby

There’s probably at least one hobby that you never had the time to fully engage in or perfect, one that you've always wanted to spend time on.

Well, now you can. Sign up to a course and indulge in your passion. The great thing is that you have no idea where it could take you or how much it may enrich the quality of your life.

  • Spend quality time with friends

It’s often the case that throughout your life, you will rarely spend as much time with certain friends as you did when you were, for example, kids, for all sorts of reasons (busy professions, geographical boundaries).

Now is as good a time as ever to put time aside for long lunches, going for walks, and catching up with good friends.
