There are loads of options for dog friendly holidays in the UK.

Gothic cottage or fisherman's hut? Central location or out in the sticks? There's an amazing array of cottages and locations for dog lovers around the UK. The biggest challenge, perhaps, is choosing the perfect one for you and your four-legged friend.

For the rover

Dogs with a sense of adventure will be thrilled by these hill walks, where they can roam beautiful landscapes and find things to sniff at every turn. Dogs can get excitable on adventurous holidays, so check you're covered for third-party liability. This will ensure your pet and the holiday property are protected.

Ty Capel, Rhiwddolion, near Betws-y-coed

Your pooch can perfect their dog paddle in the rivers and streams around Betws-y-coed, exploring the hills and valleys in the 'gateway to Snowdonia'. Dogs who enjoy stretching their legs will appreciate the 10 minute walk from the car to find this beautiful former chapel.

Laughton Place, near Lewes, East Sussex

Active dogs will enjoy the open landscape of the glorious South Downs and Ashdown Forest in Sussex. There's plenty of room to exercise in the grounds of this holiday cottage, which is close to the historic towns of  Alfriston and Lewes.

The Gate House, Dover, Kent

If your dog favours long walks in the fresh sea air, they'll love the white cliffs of Dover, where there are miles of coastal paths, amazing views, and attractions – including South Foreland Lighthouse, Walmer Castle and Deal Castle.

The Shore Cottages No.1, Berriedale near Wick, Caithness

There's plenty of open space for bounding hounds in this glorious Highland paradise. The nearby village of Wick, with its stunning harbour, offers lots to sniff and explore. Stay in this former fisherman's dwelling, which dates to the 1840s and overlooks a charming cove called the Shore.

St Winifred's Well, Oswestry, Shropshire

The glorious Shropshire Hills offer an exciting environment for any energetic pooch. This medieval well chapel, on the edge of a hamlet, is ripe for exploration too. It’s located in a secluded woodland  location, beside an ancient  spring, where your pet can enjoy a quick paddle.

Arra Venton, Lower Porthmeor, Cornwall

Your dog can leap at their leisure on the South West Coast Path, which offers very long walks, amazing landscapes and places to run. This former chapel and smithy in Cornwall is close to the path and has a garden with lots of space for exercise.

Beautiful beaches for dog paddling

These cottages are near dog-friendly beaches, perfect for pooches who love to take a dip and then dry off in the sun.

Putsborough Manor Cottage, Woolacombe, Devon

Woolacombe's award-winning beach has miles of sand, beach huts and dunes for curious canines to explore. There’s a large dog area at Putsborough Sands in the south. Stay at Putsborough Manor Cottages, and pick up the South West Coast Path nearby.

Lime Tree Stables, Winfrith Newburgh, Dorset

Does your furry friend love to scamper along the sand? Then Dorset's dog-friendly beaches are perfect. They include Durdle Door, Lulworth Cove and Chesil Beach, which has a dog-friendly visitor centre with a bowl of water on the patio. Monmouth  Beach and East Cliff  Beach in Lyme Regis are good for digging up fossils and exploring the coast.

Golden Mile Apartment, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk

South Beach in Great Yarmouth welcomes dogs, and the town has a long promenade that stretches for miles. Long walks, fascinating gardens and other  pooches to meet on your  journey – what more could any dog want?

Gunnado, St Austell, Cornwall

Dogs who are easily bored or like to keep moving will enjoy the variety in Cornwall, where 50 beaches are open to them. Hollywell Bay is well worth a visit  as it has streams to paddle  in, sand dunes, and long walks around the headland to West Pentire Beach.

Norsehaven Cottages, Durness

Durness, on the north-west coast of Scotland, has stunning beaches, including the accessible Balnakeil Beach and Sango Sands Bay. Adventurous dogs will enjoy walking through the dunes at Faraid Head. Ceannabeinne Bay is delightfully secluded – access is a bit of a scramble, but perhaps that will appeal to your dog's sense of adventure!

Let sleeping dogs lie

For the lazy pooch that's craving a little R&R away from the big city, these dog friendly cottages make for lovely secluded retreats.

The Gothic Temple, Stowe, Buckinghamshire

Does your pooch like to be waited on, hand and foot? Do they think they're the king of the household? Then they'll love this Gothic Temple,  where the grounds are a great place for relaxation and walks  – on a lead, mind you, because there are sheep.

Poultry Cottage, Leighton, Welshpool, Powys

Lazy canines looking for a beautiful  patch of countryside to get away from it all, relax, and perhaps go for the occasional walk, will appreciate this cottage. It's tucked away in the woods, with a garden (not enclosed), and lots of places to explore nearby.

Briar Cottage, The Old Orchard, Southwold, Suffolk

Indulge your dog with leisurely strolls along the promenade and walks around Walberswick, or spend long lazy days in the cottage garden. Southern parts of Southwold Beach allow dog access all year round.

Apple Tree Cottage, Sandown, Isle of Wight

For dogs wanting a relaxing holiday, this coastal location, with gentle walks near parkland, is just the ticket.  Apple Tree Cottage is on the Isle of Wight Coastal  Path – it's ten minute walk from the sea, and is well located for the popular resort of Sandown.
