Being a grandparent is incredibly satisfying, and nurturing the grandparent-grandchild relationship is important. It can be really rewarding spending time with them, and your focus should be all about having fun. As a leading over 50 Life Insurance provider, we believe it’s important to enjoy every day.

A family day out can hold a great opportunity for bonding and creating memories. If you’re wondering how to tempt the whole family away from the comfort of indoors, then don’t despair. London’s full of things to do; there’s museums, parks, galleries and even some hidden gems you might not know about.

In fact, we sent 25 bloggers to HintHunt on Wednesday 10th September, 2014, to take part in an adventure challenge. Promoting the idea of alternative activities for all the family, we wanted to encourage them to think of fun and engaging experiences to share with their family. We’ve put together a guide to how to get the most out of London, with days out that will appeal to children right through to grandparents.

HintHunt

Are you up for a challenge? Time to put those thinking caps on and work as a team. Without giving too much away (after all HintHunt pride themselves on an element of ambiguity), this will certainly be a fun day out. HintHunt only go so far to explain what to expect: “HintHunt is a fresh & brainy pulse raiser for any small circle of friends or families.”

Regardless of it being a best kept secret, HintHunt has proved very popular in the year that it’s been in London. Beginning its life in Hungary, the adventure event company gets quite booked up – so try and book in advance.

  • Location: 72-76 Eversholt Street, Euston, NW1 1BY
  • Cost: Prices start from £17 – varies depending on your booking time and group size.
  • Suitable for: Teams of minimum three, maximum five. Groups of friends and families with older children.

Horniman Museum and Gardens

This South London treasure is often forgotten about. Boasting an extensive collection of anthropology, natural history and musical instruments, the Horniman Museum offers a great day out. From the giant overstuffed walrus and the traditionally displayed galleries of African and Brazilian art, to the nature trails and weekend workshops – there’s lots to explore.

Something for the adults? There’s over 16 acres of landscaped gardens to explore, a farmers’ market with locally sourced produce and the Horniman’s café.

  • Location: Horniman’s Museum and Gardens, 100 London Road, Forest Hill, SE23 3PQ
  • Cost: Free. For entrance to specific events hosted here, booking is required. Prices vary depending on event.
  • Suitable for: Families with children of all ages.

Vauxhall City Farm

You needn’t trek to the countryside to get a little slice of farm life. Situated in central London, Vauxhall City Farm offers just that. Complete with the sights, sounds and smells of rural life, this urban farm provides educational and recreational activities. As a registered charity, their focus is on providing for and contributing to the local community.

Often hosting Family Fun Days and Family Learning Days packed for everyone to enjoy and learn, the Vauxhall City Farm offers a great day out.

Go Ape

Calling all adventure seekers! Situated in Trent Park, near Cockfosters, is Go Ape’s Tree Top Adventure Park. Nestled in acres of woodland, it’s complete with Tarzan swings, high ropes and zip wires. If you’ve got bags of energy and a hankering for some tree top fun, then why not go with your tribe?

But, if the idea of swinging from tree to tree is not for you, then you can take in the beautiful surroundings on one of their walking routes.

  • Location: Trent Country Park, Cockfosters Road, Cockfosters, EN4 0PS
  • Cost: Baboons (10-17 years) £24, Gorillas (18+ years) £32 depending of the time and type of adventure you select.
