For those who have been lucky enough to visit Bali, they’ll already know that it’s an island full of magical places and things to do. It’s unlike any other travel destination where island life has become very cosmopolitan, and with new bars, restaurants and boutiques popping up each day there’s no shortage of places to spoil yourself. However, Bali’s most endearing aspects are the many natural wonders, from the picturesque ‘Tanah Lot’ temple to the mighty ‘Gunung Agung’, a 10,000 foot high active volcano.
If we had to recommend one experience in particular, we’d say ‘head north’! Leave the crowds behind, rent a car and drive to Tulamben to see the famous USS Liberty Wreck, a US Army Cargo ship that was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine in 1942. Since then the ship has become home to a plethora of life including fish, coral, rays, octopus and if you’re lucky you might catch a glimpse of a black tip reef shark. If you’re not a qualified diver, don’t worry as the dive site is only 10-25m deep so is the perfect spot for snorkelling too.
Tulamben is a nod towards ‘old-school’ Bali, what you expected island life to be like fifteen years ago. The pace of life here is so slow it’s almost in reverse, which provides a stark contrast to the busy streets of Denpasar, the bright lights of Kuta and the superfluous Nusa Dua.
If you’re looking for a long-term stay head to the delightful Canggu, for sun, sea and surf! With plenty of small cafes and eateries combined with some world-class waves, this small surfer town has a charm that sucks people in for months at a time. There’s a magical atmosphere here that can’t be put into words… so what are you waiting for?!
