When you think of Brazil, you think of caipirinhas, Ipanema Beach, skyscrapers in São Paulo and Afro-Brazilian culture in Salvador – I know I did. My favourite experience in Brazil, however, was an activity I never expected would be possible there: Trekking through a sandy desert known of the Lençóis Maranhenses National Park.
Situated in the northeastern part of the country, between the Amazon and the Atlantic Ocean, is the Lençóis Maranhenses, a landscape of dramatic rolling dunes that seems more Saharan than South American. During the rainy season, from roughly May until August, the valleys between the dunes fill with fresh-water lakes, whose colours vary according to the mineral contents of sand beneath them.
Getting to the Lençóis Maranhenses isn’t easy, but it's worth it. It’s a three-hour flight from Rio or São Paulo to São Luis, then a three-hour bus ride to a small village called Sangue, and a three-hour 4x4 ride to the even smaller village of Santo Amaro, which is located amid the dunes at the entrance to the park.
Why do I recommend trekking in the Lençóis Maranheses? Simply put, it’s an out-of-this-world experience. Where else on the planet can you walk for hours through a desert and cool off in jewel-coloured lagoons along the way? Abundant sunshine in the Lençóis means that you can work on your tan while you swim, while the strenuousness of the trek makes sure your body is picture-perfect.
Before you set off on your travels, it's worth considering what travel insurance you'll need. An annual multi trip policy will cover all your holidays in a year, and give you peace of mind when you're away from home.
