Maggie's, the home of cancer care

Image alt text

Someone in the UK is diagnosed with cancer every two minutes and there are 360,000 new cases every year. As the amount of people living with and beyond cancer increases, so does the need for care and support.

At LV= we understand the impact of cancer isn’t just financial. That’s why we’re working with Maggie’s, a cancer charity that understands the importance of expert practical and emotional support for people living with cancer.

  • Practical support: advice about eating well, coping with hair loss, benefit entitlements, stress management, up-to-date cancer information and much more.
  • Emotional support: group and individual support from psychologists.

A friendly inviting space for people with cancer

Maggie’s centres are built by leading architects beside NHS hospitals across the UK. They offer warm, caring and inviting spaces. Professional staff welcome visitors in and offer them the tools they need to cope after a cancer diagnosis. There are group sessions, a kitchen table to meet others, benefits and nutrition advice, relaxation and gentle exercise sessions. All the support at Maggie’s is tailored to fit the needs of individuals with cancer.

They also have an online community, it's a space for anyone with or worried about cancer to share experiences and ask questions. With regular blog posts and conversations, people can feel supported during a difficult time.

Watch the video below to see how Maggie’s supported Rachel after she was diagnosed with cancer.

One thing that cancer did take away from me is a life that I worked very hard to get. I was living in Hong Kong where I was a designer for a homeware company. It was great.

I was in a consultation to check my lump. It was then I was told I had cancer. It was then decided I would be having a lumpectomy.

Once I’d came around from my surgery, the first thing I did was look at the clock and I realized that we'd been in a lot longer than my surgeon had advised.

My cancer had spread up into my lymph nodes. So it was looking now like I would need a mastectomy.

I was hoping that my life wouldn't have to change that much. I was hoping that

I would get treatment out overseas in Hong Kong but unfortunately, after getting the results, my family, my friends, wanted me to come back home.

Sorry. Sorry.

I started my chemotherapy in June and it was four months, every three weeks, two different drugs. It really did floor me.

The second drug that I had, it really went for your body. I got more tired and hair loss was a given so I lost my eyebrow hair, my eyelashes, things like that. So, my appearance was starting to change a little.

I spoke to a few friends and I was quite clearly not in a good state of mind that the only thing I could think of doing was to come to the Maggie's in Glasgow.

I came to speak to one of the Cancer Support Specialists who sat with me all afternoon. I came in in a state but I left feeling like I had options again.

The Maggie's helps you and encourages you to get back to a new routine. Having used some of their workshops, relaxation classes, the psychologist, it was a great stepping stone to get back on your feet.

The future now is all about looking forward, not back.

The Maggie's Centre continues to be part of that.
