Underwriting misrepresentation - Why we can't pay all claims

We’d prefer to be able to pay all claims but if we don't run a responsible policy, then we’re not being fair to our members and other customers.

We’ll only decline a claim for misrepresentation once we’ve looked into it in detail, and only where it’s clear that the misrepresentation affects the claim being made. In many cases misrepresentation can be accidental, but sometimes people can be deliberately dishonest to try to save money on their premium.

We may request medical evidence to validate a claim.

An example

Mr Smith put in a claim in January 2013 for cancer of the mouth against a policy he took out in June 2012. In the medical evidence we saw that on the 7 June 2012, less than 2 weeks before the application was signed, he went in for a biopsy to check a lump found in his mouth. When we received this medical evidence we checked the original application form completed on 20 June 2012. We saw that in the question asking ‘Are you awaiting the results of, or have you been advised to have, any medical investigations, tests or scans or have you any expectation of seeking advice or treatment in the near future?’ he wrote ‘no’.

Had he disclosed this on the application we wouldn't have provided the same cover, we may have charged a higher premium, or excluded Cancer cover but still been able to provide cover for all other conditions.
