Our very own Justin Harper considers why income should be the focus of every financial planning conversation and how providers are getting better at making insurance more personal.

Sales of income protection policies continue to grow year-on-year, as much as 14% at the last count. Although take-up is improving, too many of us continue to take unnecessary risks by not preparing for the future. Most clients would agree they need an income to survive.

Most clients would agree they need an income to survive. Think about our core outgoings: mortgage (or rent), utilities, running the car. Then there’s the nonessential stuff: meals out, day trips, and holidays. It all adds up, and for the average household its £2,400 a month.

Despite the cold, hard facts that income is essential, most people (clients and many advisers alike) don’t think it’s important enough to protect. The figures speak for themselves: just one in 10 of us have income protection (IP), versus four in 10 with life insurance or critical illness cover.
