Own occupation

Doctor, businessman and pilot

At LV=, we only use the own occupation definition of sickness if your client’s working and makes a claim. This means the policy will pay out, after the waiting period, if because of sickness or an accident your client is unable to do their usual occupation. Your client wouldn't be expected to go back to work in a different occupation, so whilst they are still unable to carry out the main duties of their usual occupation, and they aren't doing any other paid or unpaid work, the policy will continue to pay out, right up until the end of the policy term.

However, if your client is a homemaker or they've been unemployed for 12 months or more at the time they become sick or had an accident a claim will only be paid if they're unable to prepare a meal or do basic housework.

Please see our occupation guide for more details.
