Life and Critical Illness

Children's critical illness cover

No one ever wants to imagine their child becoming critically ill or suffering a serious accident. Sadly, although rare it can happen, causing devastation to the families affected. Although money will be the last thing on any parent or caregiver’s mind, unexpected costs such as time out of work, child care or even adaptions to the home can have a financial and emotional impact on the family.

We have two options for children's cover, offering different levels of protection:

  • Our standard children’s cover is included in your clients' policy automatically and at no
additional cost. This covers 85 conditions and pays a lump sum equal to half the amount of
cover on the main policy (subject to a maximum payment of £25,000) if the person insured’s
child is diagnosed with a life-changing condition or injury.
  • Our enhanced children’s cover to give your clients the option to be able to cover more conditions for their children. As well as the 85 conditions included in the standard cover, this includes cover for an additional 10 child-specific conditions and 6 pregnancy complications for the person insured.

Standard children's cover

  • 85 conditions and treatments covered for children - 20 conditions are included under one additional payment condition, ‘less advanced cancer’
  • We cover 48 full payment conditions and 37 additional payment conditions - The conditions are the same as the main policy with the exception of total permanent disability and our diabetes additional payment condition.
  • Covered from birth until their 23rd birthday - (including step and legally adopted children) with no requirement to be in full time education
  • We know that from birth to young adulthood your client's child will experience countless life stages along the way. We think it’s important for them to be covered during these pivotal life moments in later years such as school, university, travelling and starting their career.
With our Children’s Cover, your client's child will be covered from birth until their 23rd birthday, providing your client with peace of mind.
  • 0 day survival period requirement - Unlike other providers we’ll cover your client’s child from the moment they’re born and don’t require a 14 day survival period to pay a claim.
  • Child funeral cover - If your client's child dies before their 23rd birthday or the end date of your policy, we will pay £5,000 towards the cost of their funeral.
  • Junior option providing cover from age 23 - Once your client’s child reaches their 23rd birthday they’ll have the option (within 6 months of their 23rd birthday) to take out their own Combined Life and Critical Illness policy with us without the need for medical underwriting. This is for up to half the amount of cover on the parents policy and subject to a maximum cover amount of £25,000. This isn’t available if we’ve already paid a critical illness claim for that child.
  • Includes congenital diseases - Cover for congenital conditions such as common kidney and heart problems
  • Payment of up to £25,000 or £50,000 if both parents hold a policy

We offer a range of enhanced claim payments where we’ll double the payment for a normal child claim up to a maximum payment of £50,000 for standard children's cover and £70,000 for enhanced children's cover, in the following scenarios.

The condition claimed for is a direct result of an accident for 10 specified conditions:

  • Blindness - permanent and irreversible
  • Brain injury due to trauma, anoxia or hypoxia – resulting in permanent symptoms
  • Coma – with associated permanent symptoms
  • Deafness – permanent and irreversible
  • Loss of hand or foot – permanent physical severance
  • Loss of independent existence - unable to look after yourself again
  • Loss of speech – permanent and irreversible
  • Paralysis of limb – total and irreversible
  • Surgical removal of an eyeball
  • Third degree burns – covering 20% of the body’s surface area or affecting 20% of the area of the face or head

If your client’s child is diagnosed and meets the definition for any of the following conditions:

  • Major Organ Transplant - from another donor
  • Liver failure
  • Severe lung disease

  • Cerebral palsy
  • Child diabetes type 1 - requiring permanent insulin injections
  • Child intensive care - requiring mechanical ventilation for 7 consecutive days

If your client needs to claim on their children’s cover policy, they’ll receive a child’s claim payment of the lower amount of either 50% of the parents cover or up to £35,000, for children’s claims covered in the conditions of the policy (this applies to both standard and enhanced children's cover).

For the pregnancy complications stated above, if the person insured is diagnosed with one of the listed conditions we will pay £5,000 where we'll pay once per pregnancy.
