Business Protection

How many steps are you away from writing Business Protection?

New to Business Protection? It's probably going to be easier than you think.

Many advisers assume Business Protection is difficult to write, believing they don’t have a client base, or the products are too complicated. In reality, this isn’t always the case, especially if you already have a substantial personal protection back book.

This short guide will help demonstrate that getting on the Business Protection ladder is probably easier than you think. Simply click on the relevant statements below to reveal how close you are to recommending protection to business clients.

Existing self-employed clients (sole traders or partners in a traditional partnership) present a substantial opportunity to introduce Business Protection.

  • Sole traders and partnerships are not legal entities in their own right, so ‘the business’ can’t own property (or take out loans). Any assets (and debt) would be in the name of the business owner, which would be inherited by their next of kin if they died suddenly. Existing contracts would also have to be fulfilled (or the sole trader’s family could face large fines).
  • Key Person cover can be used in this instance to clear business debt; or, keep the business running if the family chooses to carry on trading.
  • If the sole trader has key staff, these employees should be protected with Key Person cover to ensure ongoing business success.
  • As existing clients, they have already bought into you and trust your recommendations.

Medium effort needed as you already have a client base. Visit our Business Protection Guide to find out more about the basics of this type of cover.

Once you’ve exhausted your back book, you should focus on finding new clients.
