We're here to pay claims, not wriggle out of them. Read  about what you or your family need to do in the event of a 50 Plus plan claim.

In the unfortunate event that your family need to make a claim on a 50 Plus plan, they should contact us as soon as possible, to help make sure we can pay the claim quickly.

Frequently asked 50 Plus plan claims questions

What do I have to do first?

The person making the claim should contact us as soon as possible and one of our friendly claims advisers will help to guide them through the process. Initially we'll ask them to post a death certificate of the deceased with contact details of who we should deal with. We'll then write to you about any other information we may need.

What's your response time to enquiries?

We do our best to respond to any enquiries as quickly as possible. But depending on the type it may take us up to five days to get back to you.

Will my claims payment be tax-free?

Yes, as long as you pay the premiums for your plan yourself from a bank account that is in your name, or in the name of you and your spouse/partner. However the payment will be added to your estate, and your estate may be liable for inheritance tax.

Does the above still apply if I pay the higher rate of income tax?

Yes.

Does an original death certificate have to be sent in?

Yes, for every death claim we'd prefer to get an original certificate. If this proves difficult we can accept a Standard Verification Form completed by a solicitor.

How long does it take to get the payment?

Once we've received the final paperwork, we send out payment cheques within three days.

When will you pay my claim?

We’ll pay out a one-off payment when you die, as long as you’ve paid the premiums up to the date of your death. From the plan anniversary on or after your 90th birthday you don't have to pay any more premiums, but your cover will continue for the rest of your life.

In the first 12 months of your plan you’re only covered if you die because of an accident within 90 days of it happening. If you die from some other cause in the first 12 months, we won’t pay the claim and will refund the premiums you’ve paid. 

After 12 months you’re fully covered if you die, whatever the cause is.

How soon after a death should you be told?

Your family should let us know as soon as possible. The sooner that they tell us, the sooner we can start work on your claim and, as long as it’s covered by the plan, pay them.

Non-payment of premiums

In most cases your cover will stop and your plan will be cancelled if you stop paying your premiums for your plan. However, you stop having to pay premiums on the plan anniversary on or after your 90th birthday, but you’ll still be covered.
 

When won't you pay my claim?

We won’t pay a claim if we find out that it’s fraudulent. For example, the insured person hasn’t really died.

In the first 12 months - We won’t pay the full amount if you die, unless it’s as a result of an accident. The death must also happen within 90 days of the accident. Some accidents are excluded and you’ll find full details in the plan conditions, section A1. If you die from a cause other than an accident in the first 12 months we’ll return the amount you’ve paid in premiums.

After 12 months there are no exclusions around accidents, and you’re fully covered if you die, whatever the cause.
