Cruises give you the chance to enjoy many world-famous places and sights in a unique way – perhaps that’s why cruising holidays are so popular.

But many operators, cruise liners, airlines and other travel providers have cancellation penalties that can hit hard, especially when the departure date is close. So cruise travel insurance that includes cancellation and curtailment cover makes great sense.

Things to check when considering cruise travel insurance

As with all insurances, there are a few things to check when considering cruise travel insurance.

Covered all over the world?

If your cruise doesn’t take you outside Europe, you may find it cheaper to choose European travel insurance only. However, the definition of Europe seems to vary from one insurance provider to another, so check that your destinations are included in your cruise travel insurance.

Medical costs

Even if you’ve got the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) and you’re cruising in European seas, we suggest you consider having cruise travel insurance.  The EHIC won’t cover the costs of getting you to a hospital and back home if you become too ill for the cruise medical centre to treat.

Vaccines and medication

Remember to check if there are any vaccination requirements before you travel.

Personal baggage cover

You may not need this – you may be covered under your home insurance. Also check whether you need extra protection for your cash, credit cards, passports or other important documents.

Cancellation cover

Check what you’re covered for. Illness, death in the family, redundancy etc are usually covered – but it’s worth checking. And remember, you need to consider cruise travel insurance cover for events that happen before the ship leaves the dock, not just for events during the cruise.

Are you eligible?

There may be age limits, health restrictions and destination or activity restrictions − and you may need to consider extra cover.

Other things to consider

Check whether your cruise travel insurance includes personal accident insurance (and compare any potential payout) and public liability insurance (and check the limit).
