Heart drawn on sand

If you’re planning to take more than one holiday in a year, buying annual travel insurance (also known as annual holiday or multi trip travel insurance) can provide all the cover you need − and is likely to cost less than several single trip policies.

Will I save money?

Depending on how many holidays you take and the cover you want, you could save money with annual travel insurance when compared to single trip travel insurance – and you’ll save time because you have to get it only once a year. But make sure your annual travel insurance policy covers what you want it to – and remember that what you get for your money is more important than the price you pay.

Things to check

As with all travel insurance, there are a few things to check when considering annual travel insurance.

Annual travel – cover per trip

LV= annual travel insurance covers you for 31 days per trip as standard (you can increase this to up to 90 days). Some companies’ annual travel insurance policies have shorter periods and less flexible cover.

Annual travel – period of cover

You may decide to start your annual travel insurance on the same date as your holiday – but check when any cancellation cover starts – you may wish to start your annual travel insurance policy on the date you booked your holiday instead. With LV=, your cancellation cover starts on the start date shown on your annual travel insurance policy schedule.

Holiday cost included?

It’s often possible to buy your annual travel insurance at the same time as you book your holiday. This is certainly convenient, and may even be offered as ‘included’ in the price of the holiday – but, as with all similar offers, you pay for it somewhere! And you may not always get the choice or flexibility of cover you want.

Personal baggage cover

You may not need this – you may be covered under your home insurance. Also check whether you need extra protection for your cash, credit cards, passports or other important documents.

Cancellation cover

Check that you’re covered for illness, death in the family, redundancy – these are usually standard, but it’s worth checking – for example, the definition of a ‘family member’ may vary between different annual travel insurance policies.

Are you eligible?

There may be age limits, health restrictions and destination or activity restrictions and you may need to consider extra cover when considering annual travel insurance.

Other things to consider

Check whether your annual travel insurance includes personal accident insurance (and compare any potential payout) and public liability insurance (and check the limit).
