British Airways (BA) Strike Information

On 22 February the result of the BA strike ballot was announced and it was confirmed that cabin crew voted in favour of industrial action.

If you’ve booked your BA flights and holiday via a travel agent you should contact your travel agent first to discuss your options. But it is likely that strike dates will need to have been announced before alternative options can be explored by your travel agent.

If you have a flight booked directly with BA, their website should provide up to date information on the position, visit www.britishairways.com

Currently BA are advising that if your BA flight is affected by the strike, you will be able to rebook free of charge, and subject to availability, onto other BA flights outside of the strike period and up to 355 days from the original date of travel.

Refunds will only be available from BA if flights are actually cancelled or if your original booking conditions allow.

If your flight is one that is affected, BA intend to inform you directly either by email or SMS text if they have your mobile phone number. You can update your contact details on their website.

BA may offer flights on another carrier or seats on alternative flights that are not affected.

Your LV= travel insurance

We’ll try to do our utmost for any travel insurance customer whose holiday plans are affected by the planned BA strike. Although cancellation of a holiday because of strike action is not covered under the policy, as long as the booking was made before the 22 February we will do the following:

  • we will pay flight refund costs where flights are cancelled as a result of the strike if, for any reason, these are not covered by BA
  • we will pay for the unused costs of your journey that can’t be recovered if your flight is delayed more than 24 hours and you decide to abandon your journey before you leave the UK. You must have checked in on time for this to apply
  • we will refund the cost of any single trip travel insurance policy if you are no longer travelling. Alternatively we will amend the trip dates if you choose to rearrange your trip. You must contact us to amend the policy before the trip start date shown on your travel insurance schedule

There is no cover under the LV= travel insurance policy for any accommodation costs that you might lose if your flight is cancelled. If you have arranged accommodation independently of your flight, it may be worth contacting the accommodation provider to find out what options are available to you.

For customers who booked flights with BA after the 22 February or who took out insurance after the 22 February, there will be no cover for anything that occurs as a result of the strike action. This is because notification of the strike was widely announced in the media on that date.
