Travelling abroad with your pet
What you need to do if you want to travel abroad with your pet.
In the past any pet coming into Britain had to spend several months in quarantine before being allowed to go to their home. Now there are pet passports which means that your pet can travel in and out of Britain without going into quarantine. This has been made possible by the Pet Travel Scheme (PETS).
To get a pet passport your pet will need to:
- have a microchip fitted
- have a vaccination against rabies
- have a blood test
- be issued with an official PET certificate
- be treated for tapeworm and ticks and be issued with an official certificate to prove that they've been treated
You will then need to sign a declaration of residency.
It's important to plan ahead as no animal can re-enter the UK within six months of having a blood test, which has to be done at least one month after the rabies vaccination. The vaccination lasts two years, after that you'll need to renew the passport.
When you actually make your journey, be sure to enter or re-enter the UK on a route approved by PETS. For more information about these routes and all other PETS-related information go to www.defra.gov.uk (opens in a new window).
