Moving home with your pet

What to do to make moving into a new home less stressful for your pet.

For pets, who don't understand what's going on, it can be very traumatic when you move into a new home.

Read about how you can make this traumatic event less stressful for your pet.

Some tips to help ease your pet's stress:

  • Keep your pet confined to one room while you are doing all the packing. With the upheaval they'll sense that something is happening which might make them want to go and hide in the garden or at a neighbour's.
  • Don't wash your pet's favourite toys and bedding before you move so that it has the familiar smells in the new home.
  • Give your pet lots of attention before, during and after your move as while you're packing he might think that he isn't coming with you.
  • For a few weeks following your move it would be a good idea to keep your pet indoors, because they might try to go back to their original home. If they do go outside, make sure you go with them and that they are wearing an up-to-date identity collar.
  • Don't feed your pet for a few hours before leaving your home on the day you move in case your pet suffers from travel sickness.
  • Pets like routine and this makes them feel secure. Try to stick to your normal routine leading up to the move and as soon as possible after you're in your new home.
