Pets are lovely to have but they're also a big responsibility and so it's important to make sure that they are kept healthy so that you can prevent them from getting any illnesses that could have been avoided.

Below are some hints and tips for keeping your pet healthy but if you have any doubt or concern, please consult your vet.

For dogs, consider the following:

  • Consider how much exercise your dog is going to need.
  • You should be able to feel your dog's ribs under the fur and his belly shouldn't sag.
  • His ears should be clean and shouldn't smell.
  • His eyes should be bright and clear and he shouldn't have a problem with light.
  • His nose should be kept clean.
  • Bad breath could be a sign of an underlying illness or the need for a dental.

For cats, consider the following:

  • You should be able to feel your cat's ribs through the fur.
  • His ears should be clean.
  • If his ears have white tips you could put some sun cream on when the sun is bright as they can get burnt and this can be painful for them.
  • If your cat has a runny nose he might have flu.
  • The skin shouldn't show any signs of dandruff, bald patches or sores.
  • Cats occasionally vomit hair or grass and this is normal but if they do it persistently you should take them to the vet for a check up.

You can tell how an animal is feeling by his attitude and demeanour. So if he's acting happy and healthy then that's probably how he's feeling. If you have any doubt about your pets health, it's a good idea to pay a visit to the vet.
