Pet bereavement counselling helpline
Read about the pet bereavement counselling helpline that's offered as part our pet insurance cover.
The death of a pet can be really hard to cope with on one’s own. That's why we offer pet bereavement support. Your pet’s probably part of your family, part of your life and an important friend. So when your pet dies, it’s normal to feel grief and a sense of loss – in the same way you would when a relative or friend dies.
Talking things through with our pet bereavement and illness counselling people can help. We’re here round the clock, on hand to support you while you come to terms with your loss and get ready to move on. Call our helpline on 0870 162 8153, at any time.
When a loved one – including a pet – dies, it’s natural to go through the ‘mourning cycle of loss’, which often includes disbelief, shock, fear, loneliness, grief, anger and, finally, acceptance and letting go.
Pet bereavement counselling gives you someone to talk to
With any bereavement, it can help to have someone to talk to. Pet bereavement is no different. You could talk with a friend – but not everyone understands the relationship you can have with a pet and you might find it more helpful to talk to someone who knows that ‘it’s only a dog, you can get another’ doesn’t help.
Pet bereavement and illness counselling can give you the support you need – with a professional, confidential and caring service that lets you talk with someone who understands what you’re feeling and what the loss means to you.
And because you may have made the painful – but correct – decision to put your pet to sleep, pet bereavement can have an extra element of grief. Pet bereavement counselling can help you through the difficult times and help you understand and accept that putting an end to your pet’s suffering in a humane and dignified way is a reflection of the love and care you have for your pet.
Getting another pet
Pet bereavement counselling can also help you decide if, and when, you replace your pet. The decision to fill the gap left by the loss of a pet is sometimes made in haste and regretted later. It’s best to take the time to grieve and remember your pet before deciding whether to get another. You may find it helpful to write down your memories or arrange photos of your pet in a special album while you’re thinking things through.
Moving on from the death of a pet
As with the loss of a relative or friend, ultimately we need to move on following the loss of a pet – and they would understand. So remember the good times, give a new pet a good and loving home if you feel ready – and look forward to all the good things a pet can bring.
