Preparing for the worst is not something we want to think about when feeling fit and healthy, but you never know what life is going to throw at you. Our life insurance with critical illness cover can offer you and your loved ones some financial protection if you die or become critically ill. Here are some frequently asked questions we've been asked about our life insurance with critical illness cover which you may find helpful before making your decision.
Critical illness insurance will cover you for the length of your policy and you'll receive a one-off cash lump sum if you're diagnosed with one of the 64 critical illnesses we cover - or an additional payment of up to £25,000 if you make a claim against one of our 20 additional payments. These payments are not deducted from your original amount of cover.
This type of insurance is designed to pay off your mortgage and any debts, to pay medical bills or for home modifications, for example, making your home wheelchair accessible by adding ramps if you were to suffer a stroke. It helps you to ensure that your family is provided for if you can't work due to ill health.
Our Critical Illness cover will pay a claim if you're diagnosed with one of the critical illnesses we cover and you survive for 14 days or more after your diagnosis.
The cost of critical illness will depend on your individual circumstances, such as your age and whether you smoke or not. It also depends on how long you'd like your insurance to run for, and the amount of cover you choose.

In 2014 we paid a total of £15.5 million to customer claiming on their critical illness policy. On average, we pay 9 out of every 10 claims, and only decline a claim when it either doesn’t meet the definition outlined in the policy conditions or if the customer has purposely withheld important medical information when they applied for their critical illness policy.
Yes. You and your partner can apply for cover together. The policy will pay out if one of you dies or is diagnosed with a critical illness during the policy term. But joint life cover only pays out once, so once it pays out, the policy ends, and you're no longer covered.
We used a term referred to as underwriting to calculate your premiums. We look at how long we expect you to live based on your age, medical history and other factors that are likely to impact your life expectancy.
