LV= County Championship 2010 builds towards exciting climax

Press release: 6 September 2010

It promises to be an exciting few days of cricket as, weather permitting, the LV= County Championship 2010 builds towards an exciting climax.

In Division One, the top four teams still remain in with a chance of claiming the title and all play each other in the penultimate round of games starting on Tuesday 7 September (1030) BST. Leaders Nottinghamshire, who have a 22 point lead over Somerset, remain favourites to lift the LV= County Championship trophy and could do so if they win against third-placed Yorkshire at Trent Bridge. Meanwhile, Somerset welcome fourth-placed Lancashire who, only a month ago, were potential relegation candidates had they not have won two of their last three games to leave themselves in with a shout.

At the other end of the table Essex, who were only promoted a year ago, will go straight back down if they fail to beat last year's champions, Durham, at Chelmsford. However, a win might still not be enough, if Hampshire beat Kent at Canterbury, Paul Grayson's side would be relegated anyway. Should that happen, Kent would be all but down too.

In Division Two, Sussex will be straight back up if they take just eight points from their game with fourth-placed Northants at Hove. Glamorgan will join them if they get three more points than third-placed Worcestershire and four more from Gloucestershire, from this week's matches. However, Glamorgan's trip to the Oval to play Surrey looks a little tougher than it did a week ago now that England's Kevin Pietersen makes his Championship debut.
